I think it is necessary, but it's not hard.

Go to Domains > My Domains

Click the domain you're changing

You should see a heading for "Privacy" -- click "Manage"

Log into Domains by Proxy using your GoDaddy username and the account number you got when you signed up for the privacy service (search your email).

Cancel the service

I'm trying to do the same thing (move my GoDaddy domains to DreamHost). GoDaddy's site is almost unusable with all the upselling ad junk all over the place. (Plus, that Bob Parsons guy seems kinda sleazy.)

Also, I think that private registration is essential. I used to get lots of spam from domain registrations before I started using privacy.

Anyway, my question is: How do I get GoDaddy to remove the private registration. And, is it completely necessary that I do that? That's the only part I'm having trouble with.

Why? I don't see godaddy as shady - so far, I've had AWESOME service with them. And I've never paid more than the standard 8.95/yr for a .com domain, I don't know where you get this crap about them hiking the prices to stick it to you on renewals...

As for the private registration; I don't use it, but from what I can tell, is that you're just saying it's a feature that dreamhost includes for free, whereas you pay for it at godaddy. Same as any other buy this and get this expansion free deal - let me show you one at godaddy; I have no use for Private Reg, but I DO need advanced pinpoint DNS control - and that's one of many things godaddy includes at no extra cost.

Meh now I'm sounding like some kind of goddady advertiser - I'm not paid by them or anything, just a very happy customer. I'd mark Godaddy up there with Google and Apple, Inc as my favoritest companies in the world. And I have a dreamhost account, I'd be more inclined to say they are the dirtier company. Have you looked at (mediatemple)'s products? I have a hosting account with them as well, they're quite awesome.
